Overview

Perhaps the only profession vilified more than lawyer in our society is telemarketer. But whether its phone calls, emails or direct mail, the increasing number of promotions we receive daily is viewed by many as an unwanted nuisance. Privacy advocates argue that laws are needed to protect consumers from mass marketing that comes into our homes and mailboxes, both real and virtual. Marketers and civil liberties advocates caution against restrictions that threaten the free speech rights of nonprofit and for-profit organizations and the workings of a free marketplace. To what extent can we set limits on a marketer’s ability to access supporters or consumers?

Guests
Laura Betterly is a Co-Founder of MP3 software company and the CEO/President of Data Resource Consulting, Inc, an on-line direct marketing business. An accountant, administrator and marketing executive as well as a writer and musician, Ms. Betterly has spoken widely promoting direct online marketing as a tool for small businesses and entrepreneurs. She is a founder of donatemaillist.org.

Robert Bulmash founded Private Citizen, Inc. (PCI) in 1988 to expose and limit the privacy abuses within the direct marketing industry. Through PCI, Mr. Bulmash counsels consumers on how to curb marketing calls and mail, and directs them to resources to help them sue telemarketers who break the law. An outspoken privacy advocate, he has testified on telemarketing privacy issues before the U.S. Senate, the Federal Communications Commission and various state legislative bodies. State and federal lawmakers commonly call upon his expertise in the creation of such laws.

Closing Quote
"Doing business without advertising is like winking at a girl in the dark. You know what you're doing but nobody else does."
