In the last half-century, more than 75,000 chemicals have been released into our environment. We come in contact with these synthetic substances in the air we breathe, the water we drink, the cosmetics and computers and cleaning supplies we use every day. ### Environmental activists argue that we have seen increased rates of everything from asthma to cancer and they question whether the chemical industry should, like tobacco, be held liable for the costs to public health. But industry officials warn against additional regulations that, they argue, do more to boost political approval ratings than protect public health. Laws, they say, should be based upon science and not derive from nostalgic notions of a pristine environment.
