Overview

The first thing a parent hears when a baby is born is "it’s a boy!" or "it’s a girl" ... But, more often than you might think, a baby’s gender isn’t so clear and sometimes a child raised as a boy believes he is a girl or vice versa and grows up to be an adult who wants to live and be recognized as a person of the opposite sex. Gender identity is increasingly finding its way into the courtroom as transgendered people assert they have a right to live free of discrimination. Should civil rights laws protect people who dress in drag or get sex re-assignment surgery?
